University of Manchester fire remediation

The main element of the contract involved reviewing the FARMS report to detail the defects in the fire compartments and strategy of the building. Defects were then numbered in each building and scheduled out.

The works involved the installation of fire separation, notices and signs, new fire doors, upgrading existing fire doors, new ironmongery and new emergency lighting. New fire alarm systems with detection, sounders, green break glass and manual call points, new electromagnetic hold open détentes, new disabled refuge systems and decorations were also completed throughout.

Fire separation works were undertaken to re-establish the integrity of the fire strategy and compartmentation. This involved the installation of fire batt, fire mastics, fire foam, intumescent pillows, rockwool wired fire blankets and new plasterboard stud partitions.

Other items include emergency lighting upgrades, specialist fire retardant paint and varnish, wireless hold open systems and associated mechanical and electrical works.

A large percentage of the fire doors were refurbished to include improved glazing and replacement smoke seals in order to ensure compliance with the requirements of the university’s fire audit. This enabled the university to save money, reduce waste and reduce the project’s carbon footprint.
