Galloway’s Society for the Blind

The works consisted of the development of an existing art deco building within a conservation area in Morecambe town centre. Restoration of the building’s façade was key to the success of this project, restoring key architectural and original features, which were designed into the modern and stylish building fit-out.

Restored features specifically included a panel of mosaic tiles at the front entrance, and ornate pillars at the entrance to the café. The extension was sympathetically designed with windows complementing the existing building which formed part of the planning application, with reclaimed materials also used to protect and restore the building’s features.

A social enterprise café was created alongside an ‘ideas store’, offices, meeting rooms, and recording studios for the charity’s talking newspaper. External works included new car parking, landscaping, and infrastructure.

The 38-week project was successfully completed on programme, within budget, and with minimal disruption to the charity’s operations and neighbouring businesses.

Being situated in a busy shopping environment, it was vital to liaise with the town council, and other contractors on site in the area, working as part of a wider regeneration programme. Through this approach we were able to minimisenoise and traffic disruption caused by construction traffic including deliveries and waste collections.
