This project involved the design and build of an organic waste transfer station for the storage and distribution of green waste for Wigan Council.
The station has four large, rapid-rise, sectional overhead doors for vehicle access and egress. The main building comprises of strip foundations, ground bearing slab, steel frame, pre-cast concrete walls and a composite sheet metal cladding system.
The building features pre-cast concrete bays for the storage of organic waste. The project also included the construction of a weighbridge, wheel wash, extensive concrete hardstanding, and a modular welfare and security building. Infrastructure included the site access road, together with water, power and data connections.
The entire brownfield site required major ground remediation to a depth of two metres due to the unusually wet ground conditions, with lime-stabilisation required to reduce the soil’s moisture content. A specialist atomiser system was installed to control smells as required by the planning conditions.
This project was successfully delivered on budget, and four weeks early, despite the major ground remediation required, and with minimal disruption to the public or surrounding premises.
